COURSE DECSRIPTION
Physical science is a required lab-based course designed to give students a better understanding of the physical sciences. Physical Science A will explore chemistry through atoms and chemical reactions, while Physical Science B studies motions of objects and energy transformations. Emphasis will be placed on conceptual understanding of the content, with appropriate mathematical quantitative support. This framework is essential to building an appropriate base for success in future high school science classes.

GRADING
Grading scale:
Overall class grades will be determined using the below scale:
A = 90%-100%
B = 80%-89.5%
C = 70%-79.5%
D = 60%-69.5%
F = 0%-59.5%

Class Rules
To ensure a safe and productive learning environment, students are expected to follow these few rules:
Consequences for Breaking Rules
If a student chooses to break a rule, they can expect:
ATTENDANCE & TARDIES
It is important for all students to be at class every day to maximize their learning. The occasional absences for unavoidable legitimate conflicts (family emergencies, etc) are accepted, and to be cleared through the attendance office. In the event of an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to make up missed work as soon as possible. If possible, students should check in with the teacher prior to the absence; otherwise students should check the class website and communicate with classmates to check what they missed due to their absence.
Additionally, it is important to be in class and participate in “bell to bell” learning. Tardy students will only be admitted to class by presenting a slip proving they have checked in with the attendance office. In the event that a student is tardy three times, he/she will receive a detention. A fourth tardy will result in the student completing a behavioral action plan and parental contact will be made. A fifth tardy will result in a discipline referral.
PHONES & DEVICES
Electronic devices (mobile phone, etc) should be put away unless instructed by the teacher to be used for a lesson activity. A first offense will result in a warning; a second offense will result in the device going to the office for the remainder of the day; a third offense will result in the parent needing to come pick up the phone; and a fourth offense will result in detention.
COURSE MATERIALS
Students will need the following materials by the end of the first week:
Composition notebook (to be used exclusively for this class), pencils, loose-leaf notebook paper, scotch tape, and a calculator (non-graphing is OK)
STUDENT & PARENT/GUARDIAN SIGNATURE
I have read and understand* the policies and expectations of Mr. Pinkstaff’s Physical Science class

- Assignments (in-class work, homework): 40% of overall gradeEmphasis will be placed on practicing the content. Grades on assignments will thus be given based upon assignment completion; late work may be accepted for reduced credit up to the end of the unit. Assignment grades will be appraised during periodic notebook checks.
- Quizzes: 5% of overall grade
Quizzes are a chance for students to check their level of understanding, after having received feedback on their assignments. Grading will be based upon the accuracy and depth of their knowledge. - Standards: 50% of overall grade
At the completion of each unit, students will be assessed on their level of performance of the learning targets in that unit. - Tests: 5% of overall grade
A cumulative final test will be given at the end of each semester. Re-takes will NOT be allowed, though it is an opportunity for students to demonstrate improved proficiency on previous standards.
